Houston has a lot of houses running on a panel that was sized for the house they used to be. We replace and upgrade electrical panels across the city — permitted, inspected, and with the CenterPoint side coordinated so the power comes back the same day.
People call us about panels for two different reasons, and it is worth knowing which one you have.
The first is capacity. The panel works fine, it is simply full, or the service coming into it is too small for what the house has become. A hundred-amp service was plenty in 1968. It is not plenty once somebody has added a second air handler, a pool, a tankless heater and a car that charges overnight.
The second is condition. A breaker that trips with nothing unusual running, a panel that is warm to the touch, scorch marks at a breaker, a buzzing that does not stop, or a burning smell. That is not a capacity problem and it does not wait for a convenient week.
If your house is in the Heights, Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, Meyerland, Sharpstown or anywhere else built between the fifties and the late seventies, there is a fair chance of finding a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or a Zinsco panel behind the cover. Both have a documented history of breakers that do not trip when they should.
We will tell you what is on your wall and what we found when we pulled the cover, in writing. If it is fine, we will say that too — an old panel is not automatically a bad panel, and we are not going to sell you a service upgrade you do not need.
Turn off what you can and call. Our service department runs 24 hours and Houston is the middle of the area we cover at night, not the edge of it.
24-hour emergency electrical service
This is the part that catches people. A Houston address does not automatically mean a City of Houston permit. Plenty of houses with a Houston mailing address sit in unincorporated Harris County, and that is a different permitting authority with a different inspection process.
We work out which one your address falls under, pull the permit there, and schedule the inspection. You do not need to chase it.
Replacing a panel usually means the meter has to come off, which means CenterPoint has to disconnect and then reconnect. We coordinate that, and we tell you which day and roughly how many hours before we start — not once the cover is already off the wall.
If the storm took your meter mast or service riser with it, that is worth knowing: the mast and the weatherhead on your house are yours, the drop coming to them is CenterPoint's. They will not reconnect until the house side has been repaired and inspected, which is why a downed riser turns into a permit job rather than a phone call.
A load calculation is the cheapest step in any of these jobs and the one that decides whether the rest of it is simple or expensive. Run it before you buy the equipment, not after it is sitting in your garage.
